The Importance of Attending Lectures: A Student’s Perspective
When you first start university, it can be extremely tempting to skip lectures in favour of a more thrilling or exciting aspect of student life. Whether it’s to catch up on sleep or just feeling really overwhelmed with assignments, missing a lecture might seem like a minor event. However, I personally believe that attending lectures regularly is one of the most important things you can do in order to excel in your studies. Here’s why: 1) Close Contact With Your Lecturers Lectures are one of the few opportunities where you can have direct contact with your lecturers, especially in your first year. Lecturers often include loads more information in lecture presentations than what is usually included in textbooks as they can provide insights from their own research or industry experience. Attending lectures gives you a chance to ask questions about anything you’re confused about, clarify complex topics, and gain a deeper understanding in the course material, which isn’t always possible just from looking at the PowerPoint slides. This all makes studying later on so much easier. 2) Lectures Highlight What Is Important University courses tend to be packed with lots of information, so it can be challenging to know which parts are the most important for exams and assignments. Lectures often emphasise the main points that lecturers expect you to learn and know. If you miss these lectures, you risk missing important hints about what is likely to come up again in the future or what to include in important assignments. 3) Learning Beyond the PowerPoint Many students believe that they get the full content by looking at the lecture slides uploaded to Moodle. However, lecturers usually only include a brief outline or summary of a topic or term that they later dive into further in the lecture. They can give real-world examples and may even share information not included on the slides that can be helpful in consolidating your learning. By attending your lectures, you are ensuring that you receive the full learning experience. 4) Improved Focus It’s easier to stay engaged with the course material when you’re present in a lecture hall compared to being at home where there are many distractions. In a lecture environment, you’re more likely to stay focused on the topic and, in turn, absorb the information. Regular attendance also helps you to build a routine, making it easier to keep up with course work throughout the term. 5) Networking University isn’t just about learning academic content, it can be about forming connections with your lecturers and fellow students. Going to lectures gives you the chance to meet other students studying the same course as you. These connections can lead to study groups, friendships and even professional networks that may benefit you in the long run. Also, it is important to know that making friends in your classes is not exclusive to first year, some of my closest friends are people I met in my second and third years. 6) It’s Part of the Uni Experience Attending lectures is simply part of the university experience. Engaging with material, participating in discussions, and learning directly from experts is what sets university apart from independent study or online courses. In conclusion, missing a lecture here or there may not seem like a big deal in the moment, but missing out on consistent attendance can have long term effects on your education. Going to lectures allows for you to stay engaged, connected, and on track for that all important graduation! Make the most of your Uni experience by learning as much as you can and enjoying every minute, your future self will thank you! This is my personal opinion on why attending lectures is so important, and I hope it encourages you! If you have any questions or want to hear more advice, feel free to reach out to me!
