My Open Day: Helpful and Welcoming
Attending the Abertay Open Day was one of the most helpful and reassuring steps I took during the decision-making process. I was still weighing up my options and trying to imagine what life at university might actually be like. It gave me real insight into the course, the campus, the people, and helped me to picture myself becoming a student here. Open Days are for anyone considering applying, whether you’re still exploring your options or leaning toward a specific course. You can visit the campus, attend all sorts of talks, meet current students and academics, check out Dundee and get a real feel for what studying here might be like. They are ideal for getting a first impression and asking questions before you apply. Families and friends are very welcome too, which was great. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but the day was well-organised and welcoming from the start. For LLB Law, there was a subject talk followed by a mooting activity. The lecturers who led the session gave an in-depth overview of the university and the LLB course. They described what you actually study, how classes are taught, and the kinds of skills that Law develops. They also highlighted Abertay’s impressive rankings and reputation, and the range of extra-curricular opportunities available outside of the classroom. The relationship between the staff and students made the most positive impression on me. It was clear that the lecturers knew their students well and cared about their progress, and the students were equally enthusiastic about learning. That sense of connection and community was something I hadn’t seen at other universities, and it stuck with me. This is one of those things you can’t find out online; you have to be there to experience it for yourself. Throughout the day, we had the chance to meet current Law students and hear about their experiences. They spoke honestly about what it was like studying at Abertay; not just academically, but socially and professionally as well. Listening to them talk about the Law Society really caught my interest. I hadn’t thought much about joining a society before, but hearing how it helped them grow in confidence, build friendships, and strengthen their CVs made me see the value straight away. It was then that I started thinking about actually studying here. The campus tour was also useful. We were shown around the library and other key facilities, which helped bring the whole experience to life. The library, in particular, was a bright, modern space that I could imagine spending a lot of time in. If you’re considering applying to Abertay, I would really encourage you to attend an Open Day. It’s not just about picking a course; it’s about finding a place where you can learn, grow, and feel at home. For me, Abertay ticked all those boxes – and the Open Day was the start of it all.
