Exploring Reading Town Centre: A Student’s Guide to the Best Spots
One of the best things about studying at the University of Reading is the proximity to a lively and diverse town center. Whether you're looking to shop, eat, or just unwind, Reading has something for everyone. Here’s a guide to some of the top spots in Reading town center that every student should know! 1. The Oracle Shopping Centre: Your One-Stop Shop The Oracle is Reading's premier shopping destination, offering everything from high-street brands to boutique stores. Whether you need to pick up essentials or want to treat yourself to some new clothes, you’ll find it all here. It’s also home to a range of restaurants and cafes, perfect for grabbing a quick bite or enjoying a meal with friends. My personal favorite is the Riverside area, where you can dine with a view of the River Kennet. 2. Forbury Gardens: A Peaceful Escape Need a break from studying? Forbury Gardens is a beautiful public park located just a short walk from the town center. It’s a great spot for a picnic, a leisurely stroll, or simply to relax with a book. The garden’s iconic Maiwand Lion statue is a popular landmark and a great backdrop for photos. I often come here to clear my head between classes, especially in the spring when the flowers are in full bloom. 3. Reading Market Place: Fresh Finds and Local Flavor Located in the heart of the town, Reading Market Place is the perfect spot to discover local produce, street food, and artisanal goods. The market often hosts special events, such as food festivals and vintage fairs, which provide a fantastic opportunity to experience Reading’s local culture. I love grabbing a fresh pastry from one of the stalls and people-watching while I enjoy my treat. 4. Reading Museum: Dive into Local History If you’re a history buff or just looking for something different to do, the Reading Museum is a must-visit. Located in the historic Town Hall, it offers fascinating exhibitions on the local area’s history, including its role in the medieval and Victorian eras. The museum is free to enter, making it a great, budget-friendly way to spend an afternoon. Exploring Reading town center is one of the many perks of being a student at the University of Reading. It’s a dynamic place where you can find everything from relaxation spots to cultural landmarks, all within easy reach. So, grab your friends, head into town, and discover all that Reading has to offer!
