Volunteering in Paradise: My Fijian Experience
Join T'anna on an incredible journey as she shares her experiences volunteering in Fiji with Think Pacific and Solent's Study Abroad Scheme, all in support of the Fiji Government's National Development Plan. From working hand-in-hand with local communities to experiencing the rich culture and stunning landscapes of Fiji, T'anna's blog is a first-hand account of the contributions she made and the unforgettable memories she created. Bula! I decided to volunteer with Think Pacific as they specifically help Fijian Villages to achieve goals and objectives with the help of the Fijian Government and this really stood out to me as well as the astounding location of Fiji. My volunteer trip to Wauosi Village in Nadroga-Navosa, Fiji has been an absolute privilege. Being able to live in Wauosi village and with my Fijian family has been so humbling and incredible. The month in Fiji has opened my eyes as it was a completely new environment and culture. The adventures that I got to embark on, including walking to the waterfall, with the Fijian youth of the village was a delight. Working with the Fijian youth to support and develop their knowledge as well as ours on leadership, mental health, public health, environment, enterprise and sport’s development. The differences between our two cultures are so profound and are so interesting to find out, and to support the youth to understand new viewpoints in these areas. It was a privilege to learn and be taught by the youths about the Fijian and the Villages culture. I have learnt how to weave, make billi billi’s, and lean how to cook traditional Fijian recipient and foods. The chance to live with a Fijian family was a remarkable experience, I feel so fortunate to say that I have a new family for life. This special experience is one that I will never forget and I feel so lucky and blessed that I got to live in Wauosi Village and be in Fiji. I’d definitely recommend volunteering with Think Pacific as it will be an experience of a life time! Vinaka Wauosi and Think Pacific. Are you a current Solent Student?
