The pros and cons of commuting to university
First of all, commuting is a decision not to take lightly. You need to ensure you are prepared to commute at least three days a week and have a convenient way of getting to the University. I drive into the university every time I have a lecture. This can be good as it gives you flexibility at home whilst studying. However, of course, there are the cons. I will analyse both the pros and cons in this article for you to consider. I hope this helps. Positives It allows you to divide your time between home and university, giving a good home and study life difference. It allows you to live with your family members; this is good, especially if you have a caring responsibility. In the long run, it saves money as you’re not paying for university accommodation, although you might have to pay rent where you live. If you prefer your comfort zone, staying home is definitely for you, as it can be quite intrusive in the halls. You can decorate your room/keep your room however you want it at home. You cannot do this university as there are restrictions. You might not have to face too many responsibilities to stay at home. However, that depends on your circumstances. It was great just to go home after a long day. You don’t get homesick. Negatives If you have a 9 AM lecture and then a 4 PM lecture, you must find something to do between these times. These days can be long if you live close to investing and you can go home; however, if you live far away, then you will have to find a way of staying busy and productive. The University halls with fellow coursemates.(This can also be a positive, as you have a break from your friends) It might be slightly more difficult to make friends. (I have not had this problem, and I know many commuters who have not had this problem) A lot of societies and sports are late in the evening, so it’s pretty hard to attend these events and clubs. You have a sufficient place to study at home, e.g. a desk. If not, this might be a problem as you want somewhere quiet and enough room to study at home. (There is or is the library to use on campus if not) Whereas the University accommodation is provided with desks. Fuel and travel costs can add up. In my personal opinion, it is still cheaper than University accommodation. It can be nice to have independence in accommodation if you have this at home. However, travelling also requires a lot of independence. I hope this summary helps you decide whether to commute or stay home during your studies. I find commuting to the university a great way to stay at home. There is also a support group at the university that has regular meetups with pizza, biscuits and lots of tea, and it is always really lovely to meet people in the same situation as you. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
